- Copy of a Check if you wish to have direct deposit of any refund (or the routing and account numbers)
- Social Security Number and date of birth for any children born in 2023
- Driver's License (or other State ID) information - State, Number, Date Issued and Expiration Date
- Day care providers’ names, taxpayer identification numbers, addresses, and amounts paid
- W-2s from all employers and 1099-Rs from pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s, or annuities, including rollovers
- Alimony received or paid (including the social security number of the ex-spouse you paid) and the date of the divorce
- 1099s for interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), unemployment (1099-G), social security benefits (SSA-1099), gambling winnings (W2-G), student loan interest (1098-E), state income tax refund (1099-G), HSA distributions (1099-SA), healthcare purchased through the marketplace (1095-A), third party and credit card collections (1099-K), etc.
- State income taxes you may have paid during 2023 (about any year) to another state
- Property taxes that you pay directly (not paid through your mortgage company) on any land or real estate that you own
- DMV payments for car registration
- Sales contract if you bought a car in 2023 (for the sales tax deduction)
- Interest paid on mortgages - Each mortgage loan will have a separate Form 1098 even if it’s with the same company for a second mortgage or a refinanced loan.
- Closing statements if you bought, sold, refinanced, or borrowed on any real estate including any short sales, rentals, your own home or vacation home
- Statements for charitable donations and tithing
- Business expenses grouped and totaled into categories if your are self-employed. We have worksheets for many professions to help organize things available at www.thetaxmanllc.com.
- Rental income and expenses for any rental property including any property manager's annual report. We have a worksheet for rental property income and expenses at www.thetaxmanllc.com.
- K-1s from partnerships, LLCs, trusts or S corporations. If you haven’t received these yet (they often come in March, April or even the summer) schedule your appointment anyhow. We can do the rest of the return and then easily fill them in once they show up.
- If you had stock sales, bond sales or redemptions, mutual fund sales (even switching funds or stocks inside an account is a sale), or certificate of deposit (CD) redemptions you get a 1099-B showing only the sale/redemption side of the transaction. I need to also know the purchase side of the transaction including the date purchased and the amount you paid. Especially if you lost money, we need to show the transaction or IRS will call it ALL profit.
- 1098-T for tuition paid. College tax credits for you or your dependents cannot be taken without a 1098-T form. Students often need to download this from the school website. We'll also need a tuition account statement showing actual payments.
- Estimated tax payments made (other than from W-2 or 1099 withholding) with dates and amounts. Don’t forget the January 2024 payment which applies to your 2023 return
Corporate/LLC/Partnership Clients
- Your profit and loss statement from Quicken, QuickBooks, Excel or other record keeping system you used
- Equipment purchased in 2023
- Year-end bank balance on 12-31-2023 according to YOU, not the bank (they won’t show uncleared checks)
- Any interest earned on money market accounts and the account balance as of year-end
- Copies of payroll statements/reports (I already have these if I do your payroll reports) including:
- Federal Forms 941 for all four quarters, Form 940, Form W-3
- Unemployment Wage reports for all four quarters (Employer's Contribution Report)
- Modified Business Tax reports for all four quarters to Nevada Department of Taxation (Nevada only)
- Corporate returns are due by March 15, 2024 (NOT April 15). If I haven’t heard from you as that date gets near I will try to file a six month extension to September 15th if I did a return for 2022.
